About Joe Hwang
I grew up in Madison, Alabama. After completing a BS in microbiology, M.Ed. in Physical Activity and Health, MLS(ASCP) program, and a MPH degree, I completed PA school at Mercer University. I had a very successful run as a PA student, dominating my schoolwork while leading our volleyball team to an undefeated season and convincing about 30 of my classmates to put on $2 Amazon full sleeve tattoos for, you know, “intimidation factor.”
I have since worked in a high acuity urgent care and serve as the laboratory director for 3 CLIA moderately complex labs.
I am an adjunct professor for the PA programs at Mercer University and South College and am passionate about teaching and mentoring.
Over the past 4 years in the urgent care, there has rarely been a day in clinic where I have not had a shadow, intern, or clinical student with me.
I have thoroughly enjoyed speaking at various pre-PA clubs in the Southeast and walking pre-PA students through their applications and interview prep. I have had the privilege of mentoring over 20 students so far who have been accepted to Mercer University, South College, Eastern Virginia Medical School, Faulkner University, Lincoln Memorial University, Augusta University, the University of Tennessee, Radford University, and more!
In 2023, I started an internship program at my urgent care for pre-PAs and have trained over 30 interns so far. Many of our interns have gone on to obtain a job as a medical assistant, and a handful have already gotten in to PA school!
As an adjunct professor, I give lectures, board reviews, proctor exam and skills finals, and interview potential students for PA school. I have had the opportunity to interact with hundreds of PA students and am always looking for ways to provide guidance on navigating the didactic and clinical years.
Additionally, I often gets calls from previous students regarding job decisions, contract negotiations, and advice for starting off at a new job as a new grad.
No matter where you are in your PA journey, feel free to reach out to see if this mentorship would be beneficial for you!
